Clean drinking water is the essence of life!
70% of our bodies is composed purely of water. Although a human can survive a month or more without food, a week without water proves fatal. Water has so many health benefits that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends drinking no less than eight 8-ounce glasses of water every single day. So, it’s no secret that water and wellness are linked. Luckily, the majority of Americans have access to tap water. However, there are so many health risks related to tap water because in some cases the fluid is tainted with contaminants and viruses, as well as other pollutants. Therefore, we should try to not take good, clean drinking water for granted.
Homes need to have a great filtration system at home, and oftentimes a reverse osmosis system is what is used in households. But exactly how does a reverse osmosis system work?
How Does A Reverse Osmosis System Work?
Reverse osmosis membranes are comprised of three different layers for filtration:
- Polyamide layer
- Polysulfone layer
- Polyester base
The household water pressure forces the water through these different phases. So how does a reverse osmosis system work? There are four steps to the reverse osmosis process.
- During this pre-filtration phase, the units membrane reduce the fine or floating materials in the water that could clog the system.
- Next, the system works to remove chlorine, and other chemicals like trihalomethanes, volatile organic compounds, lead and fluoride that would ordinarily damage the membranes in phase three.
- This phase pushes the water through a semipermeable membrane that removes health related contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, and pesticides. After this, the water goes into a pressurized tank that will store the treated water until it is ready for use.
- This is the final stage! Think of this phase as a polishing stage; the water goes through a carbon filter to remove any remaining tastes and odors from the water. Therefore, when the water comes out, it tastes as clean and crisp as it actually is.
Benefits of a Reverse Osmosis System
Household Benefits
We drink water daily, but we all also use water in our homes on a daily basis as well. We use water when we bathe, wash our clothes and dishes, water our gardens, when we cook and when we clean. Hard water affects your home through your appliances, to your drinking water, down to the water you shower in and use for cooking. Hard water shortens the life of plumbing and appliances, along with the life of your clothes and linens. Your dishes stay dirty, drinking water tastes and smells bad, hair falls limp and your skin stays dry. The water filter removes these issues and leaves you with a brand new water system.
Better Water, Better Taste
Better tasting drinking water is by far the most commonly reported benefit after customers install a reverse osmosis water system. You may not even know how much better your water can taste until you install the system. Additionally, the improved taste is an instant benefit; you don’t even have to wait! More than the taste itself; you can take a sip and feel comfortable knowing what is in your glass, and what has been taken out.
Crisper, Clearer Ice
Water that is purer freezes into purer ice cubes. This means that when you use ice in your favorite cold drink, you’re consuming higher quality water when the ice melts. Also, the condition of your ice is improved and its consistency is more appealing when preparing smoothies or frozen desserts. If you filter your water, the last thing you want to do is also have ice that is unfiltered. It’s like throwing a red shirt into the washer with your whites; it immediately defeats the purpose.
Spending Less On Bottled Water
When you have a water filter, there’s no point in buying bottled water anymore! Bottled water can be filled with microplastics that have leached right out of the bottle itself and into your drinking water. So you end up spending money on a contaminated water, and ingesting plastic material into your body. When you have a reverse osmosis system, there is no need for buying additional sources of water. Save your money, buy a refillable water bottle, and take it with you instead. With Americans using 50 million disposable plastic bottles a year, make an impact on the environment and give them up for good.
